Yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day, and it was not the typical raucous celebration. For starters, all the pubs were closed (locally and in Ireland). These are unusual times we are living in right now. We are all trying to process the new information we receive daily. Staying Connected While Keeping Distance Donegal Square’s first priority […]

Neville Gardner started Donegal Square in 1985. In small business years, 34 years is a lifetime! We are currently undergoing our first major renovation since we moved to 534 Main Street in 1996. Normally Donegal Square is only closed for the day for a major holiday (or a major snowstorm). Being closed for more than […]

In that time, we have not significantly updated our retail space and we are planning a face lift. Neville Gardner opened Donegal Square in 1985 with the hopes of bringing Celtic culture to the Lehigh Valley. Since then, he has opened McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub & Whiskey Bar and helped launch the Celtic Classic festival. Between the traditional and innovative products he sells at the shop, the family recipes served at the pub […]

My entrepreneurial journey began at age 11 in my mother's dress shop in Northern Ireland. After moving to America following a field hockey romance in 1978, I was working as a Civil Engineer in Pennsylvania. When my Dad was diagnosed with a terminal illness, I realized how difficult it was to squeeze in trips back home. Dad's illness became the catalyst for starting a business that would allow me to travel home routinely.

In February 1985, Donegal Square was born—a cultural bridge inspired by my Irish upbringing. Over the decades, my wife Linda and I have developed the shop and helped establish the Celtic Cultural Alliance and Celtic Classic Festival. Today, we've created a warm haven where visitors are "instantly transported across the Atlantic to Ireland...no passport required," offering authentic Celtic gifts in an atmosphere that feels like visiting the old country with friends.
