A Little Piece of Ireland in Bethlehem

Donegal Square Irish storefront with green-striped awning, Celtic knot motifs, tweed displays; celebrates authentic Irish heritage.

Oct 2, 2026

Step through the doors of Donegal Square in historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the Atlantic seems to disappear. The scent of Irish wool, the gleam of Celtic jewelry, shelves bright with pottery and pantry favorites, and the easy warmth of conversation create something far richer than a shopping trip.

This is a place with a soul. It feels less like a store than a doorway into the old country, held open.

A Business Born from Love of Home

Donegal Square began in February 1985 with a homesick civil engineer, a family crisis, and an idea. Neville Gardner, raised near Belfast in Northern Ireland, had moved to Pennsylvania after a transatlantic field-hockey romance with his future wife, Linda.

When Neville’s father became seriously ill, the limits of ordinary employment made returning home difficult. At the same time, friends were asking him to bring back sweaters, tweeds, and other treasures from Ireland. Those requests suggested a way forward: create a business that would keep him connected to home while allowing him to share that home with others.

More than four decades later, Donegal Square has become a beloved Main Street institution and one of America’s most distinctive Celtic destinations. Its longevity is no accident. Every corner reflects Neville and Linda’s original vision: a shop that feels welcoming, personal, and genuinely rooted in the cultures it celebrates.

Treasures with Stories to Tell

The collection at Donegal Square is handpicked from artisans across Ireland and the British Isles. Visitors discover fisherman-knit sweaters, finely woven scarves and caps, custom kilts, tartans, jewelry, pottery, family crests, homewares, foods, and gifts that carry the hands and histories of their makers.

These are not anonymous souvenirs. The staff knows the stories behind them and delights in helping each guest find something meaningful—whether it is the tartan connected to a family name, a Claddagh chosen for someone special, or a beautifully crafted piece destined to become an heirloom.

More Than a Shopping Trip

Donegal Square’s greatest offering cannot be placed in a shopping bag. It is connection.

For some visitors, that means rediscovering an ancestry known only through old photographs or a grandparent’s stories. For others, it is an introduction to Celtic craftsmanship, folklore, music, and hospitality. Whether guests arrive with deep Irish roots or simple curiosity, everyone is welcomed into the story.

A Full Celtic Experience

That welcome continues just beyond the shop at McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub and Whiskey Bar, which evolved from Granny McCarthy’s Tea Room, opened in 1997. Family recipes, fresh breads and scones, live music, whiskey tastings, and lively community events turn a visit into a full Celtic experience.

Donegal Square’s influence also reaches across Bethlehem. Neville helped establish the Celtic Cultural Alliance and the city’s celebrated Celtic Classic, now one of North America’s great gatherings of Celtic culture. Through that work, the spirit found inside Donegal Square has become part of the cultural fabric of the entire city.

Keeping Ireland Close

In an era of fleeting trends and impersonal online shopping, Donegal Square offers something increasingly rare: authenticity sustained by human relationships. It has survived and flourished because it is more than a business. It is a bridge between continents, generations, and traditions—and every visit feels a little like coming home.

Come for the craftsmanship. Stay for the stories, the welcome, and perhaps a pint upstairs. At Donegal Square, Ireland is not merely remembered. It is shared, celebrated, and kept alive for everyone who walks through its doors.

At age 11, I sold a farmer’s wife a bra in the Ladies Dress Shop that my Mum ran in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. So began my entrepreneurial adventure. Fairly early on I knew a career involving entrepreneurship, sales, and being around people was in the cards for me.

Growing up in Lambeg, a small village eight miles from Belfast, I was reared partly by my Granny McCarthy while my Mum went to work. My Mum and Dad had gone to work early in life with no opportunity for advanced education because of their family circumstances and the outbreak of World War II. Even though my parents didn’t have an abundance of money, there was always food on the table. Great breads, scones and baked goods were always part of my upbringing.

Sports have always been a huge part of my life, and because of my love for them I managed to get a Grammar School Education by receiving a scholarship (which also enabled me to participate in all the sports I enjoyed). When I first came to the USA to live, following a trans-Atlantic field hockey romance, I was drawn to the idea of importing the things from Ireland and the UK that I missed the most. Following a period of experimenting with importing tweeds and knitwear for wholesale, I realized there was potential for a business in the Lehigh Valley. The ultimate goal for my wife and I (I married a local woman, Linda Shay, the same woman from the trans-Atlantic field hockey romance back in 1978) was to create a comfortable, friendly, warm atmosphere with a rich cultural experience — as if you were visiting Ireland.
