Donegal Square was established in 1985 by owners Neville and Linda Gardner as a result of many requests by friends of Neville's to bring back various items from Ireland each time he visited his family in County Antrim. The increasing inventory inspired the Gardners to open a unique specialty shop in Historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Now, you can sample a portion of our extensive range of products right here on the Internet!
In 1996 Donegal Square moved to our current location almost doubling in size and allowing the addition of Granny McCarthy's Tea Room and restaurant. Since Neville grew up in Northern Ireland and had the benefit of both Irish and Scottish heritage it's fitting that you will find a great mixture of products from all the Celtic Lands. If you have the opportunity to pay us a visit you'll feel right at home, and maybe that you found a wee bit of Ireland or Scotland located here in Eastern Pennsylvania- no passport is required.
The name of the shop is taken from the Georgian Square in which Belfast City Hall sits. Neville worked there as a civil engineer before coming to the US back in 1979. Donegal Square has been involved with the Celtic Classic festival since its inception in 1987 and is proud to be associated with one of the best events of its kind in North America, if not the world.
Donegal Square is a Celtic Import specialty shop located in Bethlehem, PA just 90 minutes west of NYC and 75 minutes north of Philadelphia in the rural Lehigh Valley. We opened for business in February of 1985 and have evolved into one of the best stocked shops of our kind this side of the Atlantic. We carry a huge range of products from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and other Celtic vendors located elsewhere on the Globe. Since we are owned and operated by a native Irishman we cater to the whims of ex pats (foods) and US born people of Celtic decent or otherwise.
