When he was about 16, Patrick was seized from his home in Wales and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years as a shepherd before escaping and returning to his family. After entering the Church he returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop and traveled extensively in the north and west of the island of Ireland. Written evidence would imply that he lived from 380 to 461. He is credited with the conversion of Ireland to Christianity. St Patrick's Day is observed on March 17, the believed date of his death and is celebrated worldwide.
